DotA 2 or Defense of the Ancients 2 has a 2011 release date as the sequel has been announced alongside the new official DotA 2 web-site.
The sequel to the hit PC phenomenon will include optional AI and bots, different regions that players can play together, reconnect support, replays, bookmarking and spectator modes, among other additions. It will be released for both PC and Mac.
If you never heard of DotA, it’s a WarCraft III scenario that exploded in popularity and became it’s own unique RTS gametype which is commonly used in tournments and played online, and has been expanded on and modified throughout the years.
The scenerio includes powerful Hero units that level up as they gain experience and grow more powerful with new weapons that you can buy during missions, you have to defend heavily guarded structures in the map corners from attack, and you have AI controlled assist “Creeps” units to assist you in battle. The scenerio was originally created using the Warcraft III “World Editor” with the current version developed by “IceFrog” who now works for Valve or is at least leading a Valve team on development of DotA 2.
DotA is well known and is largely considered to be the most popular free, non-supported game mod in the world. So DotA 2 is definitely highly anticipated by quite a lot of people. We’re sure to learn more about it as 2011 approaches.
