Super Mario 3DS

Super Mario 3DS games on the way in 2D and 3D, says Shigeru Miyamoto

Miyamoto Nintendo characters drawing
3DS Super Mario games in both 3D and 2D are being created as we speak according to creator and producer Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo’s mastermind developer.
This was revealed in an earnings briefing during Q&A.
One thing that keeps coming up in regards to the 3DS, is Miyamoto and Nintendo’s point-of-view that 3D titles, which started with Super Mario 64, ultimately turned people away from gaming because the games were too hard to control or “too complex”. Miyamoto thinks they got it closer to right with Super Mario Galaxy in being more attractive to a wide variety of players, but they also created New Super Mario Bros., a “side-scrolling” (in this case “2D” as opposed to “3D”) entry which sold like hotcakes and proved that a much wider audience of people really were attracted to the simpler style. New Super Mario Bros. on DS over 26 million copies while New Super Mario Bros. Wii has sold over 17 million copies since last year.
“When asked ‘what will we do on 3DS,’ the answer is, of course, we’ll make both 2D and 3D Mario games. They both have their own appeal.” – Shigeru Miyamoto
“When Super Mario became Super Mario 64, the range of players narrowed greatly,” said Miyamoto. “When asked ‘what will we do on 3DS,’ the answer is, of course, we’ll make both (2D and 3D). They both have their own appeal.”
As far as 3DS Mario games are concerned, Miyamoto says that the stereoscopic 3D effect of the upcoming 3DS handheld makes it much easier for players to determine depth, which may greatly help in making 3D games appeal to the mainstream.
And these new stereoscopic 3D effects can also help with “player weight”, which is how a player perceives the weight and feel of movement to be with a particular character they are controlling. Without stereoscopic 3D, it can make it hard for the player to calculate when something that’s coming at the player will hit them. Miyamoto thinks that the way the stereoscopic 3D effects of the DS add to both depth perception and weight perception will make the games become even more accessible than before.
To quote Miyamoto:
“In 2D Mario it’s difficult to tell when they [objects/enemies] will hit the player, so we were only able to use these [depth/visual tricks] lightly. However, we’ll be able to use this type of thing quite a bit on the 3DS.”
- Iwata: “You went more in-depth than I’d been expected. This is the first I’ve heard of this.”
- Miyamoto: “No good? Don’t tell any game magazine people.”
Haha. This is all sounding very interesting. Personally I love the thought of both new 2D AND 3D Mario games for the 3DS.

Which Mario games do you like better? 3D or 2D?

Silent Hill: Revelation

Silent Hill: Revelation 3D movie announced

Silent Hill movie 2 coming
Silent Hill: Revelation 3D has been announced as the second film in the movie franchise based off the hit survival horror videogame series by Konami.
Very few details on the upcoming film have been revealed, but it has been reported that the new movie will be directed and written by Michael J. Bassett who is also directing the upcoming “The Unblinking Eye” and has previously worked on Solomon Kane, Deathwatch and Wilderness.
Although he says he can’t commit on the rumor: “There’s a lot of buzz and speculation about Silent Hill online at the moment but as no official press release has been sent out yet, I’m afraid I can’t make any comments one way or another.”
The plot of the film will star Silent Hill 3′s Heather Mason as the lead character, and the storyline will involve her estranged father disappearing upon her 18th birthday, as dark secrets regarding her origins come to light.
It’s interesting that the film series is skipping the second game and going to the third, but then again I thought the first film was pretty close to Silent Hill 2 the game in many ways.
Here is the trailer for the first film.

Bejeweled 3

Bejeweled 3 release date announced as December 7, 2010

Bejeweled 3 has been announced for PC by Popcap Games, the kings of casual entertainment. It will be released both digitally at PopCap.com as well as at retail.
The game seems to largely be the same as before though, simply adding four new re-imagined modes to the mix (like Ice Storm, Butterflies and Poker) and 11 new mini-games to the Quest Mode, which brings the total to 40.
Also featured is a new Zen Mode, which lets you customize the gameplay with ambient sounds and beats.
A visual makeover will also be made with high-definition graphcis, more fluid gameplay than ever before and better audio and music.
Here is the game’s debut trailer.

“The challenge in creating a new version of Bejeweled is to innovate and keep it fresh and exciting without losing touch with the game-play that millions of people love,” said Bejeweled and PopCap creator Jason Kapalka.
“So we’re very careful when we make changes to the core game, which is why it can take so long! We’ve worked hard to make sure Bejeweled 3 retains the classic appeal of the earlier games while bringing a host of exciting new features to the table.

Dota 2

DotA 2 announced for 2011 release date on PC and Mac as website opens

DotA 2 artwork official
DotA 2 or Defense of the Ancients 2 has a 2011 release date as the sequel has been announced alongside the new official DotA 2 web-site.
The sequel to the hit PC phenomenon will include optional AI and bots, different regions that players can play together, reconnect support, replays, bookmarking and spectator modes, among other additions. It will be released for both PC and Mac.
If you never heard of DotA, it’s a WarCraft III scenario that exploded in popularity and became it’s own unique RTS gametype which is commonly used in tournments and played online, and has been expanded on and modified throughout the years.
The scenerio includes powerful Hero units that level up as they gain experience and grow more powerful with new weapons that you can buy during missions, you have to defend heavily guarded structures in the map corners from attack, and you have AI controlled assist “Creeps” units to assist you in battle. The scenerio was originally created using the Warcraft III “World Editor” with the current version developed by “IceFrog” who now works for Valve or is at least leading a Valve team on development of DotA 2.
DotA is well known and is largely considered to be the most popular free, non-supported game mod in the world. So DotA 2 is definitely highly anticipated by quite a lot of people. We’re sure to learn more about it as 2011 approaches.

    The Force Unleashed 3

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 3 possible. LucasArts still figuring it out

Star Wars The Force Unleashed 2 sequel likely
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 3 sounds like it may or may not be in the cards, according to Julio Toress, the project lead on Star Wars The Force Unleashed 2.
But this sequel definitely sounds like it is likely. Further more, Torres said rumors of a third game being cancelled were untrue, and that the reason they won’t simply state that they are developing a third game is due to them needed time to figure out how a third game would fit, considering the ending to the second game and the Star Wars timeline.
To quote from an interview with SciFiNow magazine:
“Well I can’t tell you how the game ends because that would ruin it for you, but I can tell you that the timeframe for The Force Unleashed and TFU II is about a year, and there’s still, between that and Episode IV, a couple of years for us to play with. So that means no matter how the game ends for Starkiller and Vader for TFU II, we still have some time to figure out how we solidify the canon so that everything makes sense for IV. Obviously, if that were to be exposed, it would most likely be a TFU III. I’m just afraid I can’t share what that could be yet because we’re still figuring it out. I cautioned that…the key is that, that time is still left. If we had finished TFU II and we were up against the timeframe, we would probably have been done.”
I think it will all depend on sales of the second game, but this series seems like a lock for continuing if you ask me. The Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 release date has already hit for America and comes out today in Europe.
Here’s a trailer for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2.

    Demon’s Souls 2

Demon’s Souls 2 could happen one day

Demons Souls sequel not out of the question
Demon’s Souls 2 is not entirely out of the cards, so says publisher Sony.
The original Demons Souls was a huge critical and cult hit Japanese RPG for PS3 that came out of no where to be a success (so much so that Sony refused to publish it outside Japan . . . much to their later dismay) and ended up being not only beloved by players but selling surprisingly well for the type of hardcore game it is. It sold better than Persona 4, becoming the best-selling Atlus game ever in North America, and the first to be re-released under the Greatest Hits line.
This intense fan love and outpouring of support for the game that is the soul (pardon the pun) reason that Demons Souls COULD, could, eventually…. Get a sequel. A true sequel, albeit possibly from another developer. Keep in mind this is different than From Software’s Project Dark follow-up, which is their next title but unrelated to Demons Souls.
To quote Takeshi Kajii from Sony Japan Studios in an interview with Guardian Games Blog:
“At the moment, my answer is ‘no sequel!’ to Demons Souls,” Kajii cautioned. “However, we have been encouraged by all the players, and this title is so well supported, and besides we like this title so much… Well, this is my own feeling, but I think one day we could bring you another Demon’s Souls…”

Do you own Demons Souls for PS3?

Sadly From Software themselves has stayed quite on the manner. Hidetaka Miyazaki, producer on the original Demons Souls at From Software, deferred to Kajii when asked if they’d be involved in a sequel.
Hopefully this series will continue though and the stars will align for From Software to get involved. I think this is one of the few really unique games that fans have embraced in a huge way that is deserving of a true sequel by the same developer.
Here is a trailer for Demons Souls.

    Uncharted 3

Uncharted 3: Nathan Drake’s Going To Have A Lot Of Adventures

Nathan Drake Wallpaper Comparison (Uncharted 1 & 2)
    Uncharted 3? Uncharted 4? Uncharted 5, 6, 7, 8?
It looks like the career of Nathan Drake is only just beginning. This according to Naughty Dog’s Amy Hennig, who says that Nathan still has lots of adventures to go after Uncharted 2.
“The expectation with Uncharted 2 is that it can be an ongoing franchise as long as people want more of it.”
To quote her: “[Uncharted 2] doesn’t conclude the story at all,” she said. “The expectation with Uncharted 2 is that it can be an ongoing franchise as long as people want more of it. All these stories are self-contained. You don’t have to play the last one to play this one. Obviously, you’re going to get a little bit more out of it if you have. But [Nathan Drake]’s going to have a lot of adventures, thank god.”

PS: Apparently Uncharted 2 Co-Lead Game Designer Neil Druckmann told press at this week’s Sony Holiday Preview Event that Uncharted 3 will look better than Uncharted 2. This is possible since the game engine can still be optimized to look better on PS3. Later in a Pulse interview, Uncharted 2 lead voice actor Nolan North said “We desperately want to do a third one.”
November 2009 update: In the latest issue of Official PlayStation magazine, Nathan Drake’s voice actor Nolan North has said: “Well I know we’re going to be assured a third one. That would just be financially irresponsible, not to do a third one.”
January 2010 update: I’m glad voice actors are so talkative by nature, because Nolan — who does both Drake’s mocap and dialog — once again comments about the sequel to Gamepro magazine. This time he outright mentions that Uncharted 3 will go into production this year, as “2010 is gonna be a busy year,” he said with a smile. The magazine continues to say there are sequels to Uncharted 2 and Assassin’s Creed 2 and other unannounced game projects that need to be voiced by him.
February 2010 update: Found some interesting recent interviews with Amy Hennig, where she talks about the thought process behind Uncharted 2 and by extension Uncharted 3. Since the second game’s success in outselling the original many times has now guaranteed a third one. To quote:
“I can’t share any concrete details on a game that people aren’t going to see for a while. A big part of our process is a ton of research into a ton of real-world locations, real-world history, real explorers, and then real objects of mythological or historical importance, and the actual real mysteries that are associated with these things. We take a mystery that we know exists… and then just have fun with it. We always want to say our stuff is set in the real world, but that there are still mysteries to find even in this world that we believe has been mapped, explored, and had satellite images taken of every corner… If you know how to look, you can find unexplored corners.
I don’t have anything concrete I can hand you at this point because I’d be giving up too much anyway,” she said, stressing the amount of work that goes into researching real historical mysteries like Sir Francis Drake’s burial at sea or Marco Polo’s lost fleet of ships. She continued: “It takes a little while, pre-production wise, to come up with the next one and make sure that we’ve met all of those goals… but those are the rules that we place for ourselves. Trying to stick to something that’s familiar and then do something unfamiliar with it.”
These same sequel principles are resonated by her in this video interview:

    PlayStation 4

PlayStation 4 planned 10 years ahead of release discusses Sony Computer Entertainment President Kaz Hirai

    PlayStation 4 logo
In a recent interview Sony Computer Entertainment President Kaz Hirai was asked about the PlayStation 4 and future Sony hardware always being planned / developed far ahead and how he feels about always thinking for what comes next despite Sony’s planned ten-year life cycle for the PlayStation 3. While it may seem obvious that if the PS3 sells well, there will be a PS4, it’s an interesting behind-the-scenes view.
Mr. Hirai answered: “Well I think in any given moment, you need to think both short-term – so, what are we doing next fiscal year, how do we grow the current business – but at the same time, you also need to look four or five years out as well. To say, OK, what is the consumer wanting to do in interactive entertainment five years from now, what can we as a platform holder propose, if you will, to the consumers, to say maybe we should so this or that, and make sure that we keep the consumers engaged, and really also make sure that we are leading the market as opposed to following it. So discussions are happening all the time, about both our short term plans – what are we doing this fiscal year, next fiscal year – as well as, what is the world going to look like, what is the landscape going to look like five years from now, or ten years from now.”
This last sentence would be referring to the PlayStation 4 planning. So the Kikizo interviewer asked what happens with the PlayStation brand in this rapidly progressing technology landscape.
Mr. Hirai answered: “I think so, I think so. But at the same time, I think we have proven with two consoles already that when you say it’s a ten-year lifecycle, it’s a ten-year lifecycle. And we have the luxury I think of being able to keep that long lifecycle going, which means that we don’t need to be talking about our next-generation platform, because again we have a very stable [current] platform. And we certainly don’t want to confuse the consumers once again, by talking about something that may or may not happen five years from now. And that’s something we’re talking about and discussing up here [taps his head] in the company, but it’s not something we talk about openly, again for fear of confusing the consumers. And quite honestly, I think the PlayStation 3, we’ve repositioned it, and it’s got quite a long way to go. I mean we’re just starting here.”
I’m glad there are professional interviewers out there. I’d be asking questions like whether or not the PS4 will have the Spider-Man font as well. I mean, aren’t you curious? :-P
Update March 27, 2010: Sony Computer Entertainment has filed a “PS Cloud” trademark with the US Patent and Trademark Office. This occurred on the same day the OnLive cloud gaming service was announced, which streams videogames to your TV or PC for direct play without the need for high-end PCs or consoles. It’s unclear whether or not Sony have been working on a similar cloud gaming subscription service or if it’s simply to cover their bases in case cloud gaming is the next big thing. Sony describes the PlayStation Cloud as a provider of “entertainment services, namely, providing an online videogame that users may access through the internet”. Anyone care to guess if they are describing future PS3 or PS4 games streaming to your living room; or simply alternate reality (Xi came out on March 23, coincidence?) and arcade games in Home?

    Assassins Creed 3

Assassins Creed 3 will see Desmond become the Ultimate Assassin

Desmond and Lucy stand next to the Animus
Assassin’s Creed 2’s creative director, Patrice Désilets, at E3 2009 exclaimed “I’m telling you. At the end of AC2 you’ll say‚ ‘Holy crap, I never saw it coming!’ There will be a cliffhanger. It’s cool to have a cliffhanger,” that leads into Assassin’s Creed 3.
The brains behind the Assassin’s Creed series feels that you need to experience a bit of frustration at the game’s completion, with a new way to replay completed missions countering some of that nagging feeling. As well as still having secrets hidden in the game, like the glowing writing on the wall at the end of Assassin’s Creed 1. About that Patrice says “It has nothing to do with Assassin’s Creed 2, what’s written on the wall has to do with the Assassin’s Creed universe, not the second one.”
“Assassins Creed has always been planned to be a trilogy, and Desmond is going back in time, using the Animus to eventually become the ultimate assassin.”
If the above didn’t hint at another sequel enough… Later that same week Ubisoft re-confirmed Assassin’s Creed 2 is the second game in an intended Trilogy, “with all parts telling the story of the ultimate assassin.”
When asked if in the game series’ future Desmond’s story will move away from the Animus, a representative said: “It’s always been planned to be a trilogy, and Desmond is going back [in time, using the Animus] to [eventually] become the ultimate assassin. Can’t tell you any more, though.”
Do you think Desmond will be a good enough assassin to stop the end of the world on December 21, 2012?
Now that we know more about the storyline in the Assassin’s Creed universe, we also get a clearer picture of the endgame in Assassin’s Creed 3. The highly advanced race of “The Ones Who Came Before” spoke through a hologram of Minerva to Desmond, through “The Propheth” Ezio, about their Temples. Several of these Temples were built around the globe to prevent the end of the world in 2012. The only known Temple so far is below the Vatican. In Assassin’s Creed 3 Desmond will have to find the other Temples in time. This to activate them in order to prevent a solar flare from reaching and scorching the Earth, which would kill nearly everyone once again. In a race against time, Desmond will have to re-enter the Animus 2.0 to continue his search for the exact locations of the Temples via his ancestor’s memories.
See what 1 of the Temples looks like at 4:30 into Assassin’s Creed 2’s ending video:

I guess Minerva was too busy looking at the future to give Desmond any sort of indication as to the locations of the Temples? Thanks a lot Minerva!
September 2009 update: Assassin’s Creed 2’s creative director Patrice Desilets is busy finishing the second game’s development, and mentions he’s looking forward to rounding out the trilogy. To quote the Joystiq & VG247 interviews: “I have many different ideas. I’m not ready yet to exploit them. I think I have some juice left in me left to continue this. I’ve been doing Assassin’s Creed games for the past six years. It’s tough to be bored. I was a bit bored with the Turk crusade and the monk aspect, and everything, but in this there’s a brand new setting. And it’s my first sequel; I never did a sequel before, because I didn’t do any Prince of Persia sequels. I love the idea of refining your ideas, the gameplay and what you can do with it. So I’m not bored yet.” I wonder what change of scenery we can expect in Assassin’s Creed 3?
Desmond and Lucy work with the Animus 2.0 to find The Truth
November 2009 update: The November issue of Xbox World 360 magazine has an interview with Assassin’s Creed producer Sébastien Puel, where he talked about Ubisoft’s ideas for Assassin’s Creed 3! To quote:
“We’ve had discussions on that very topic. It could be really interesting but we’d need to find the right time period and place for that. Where would that make sense? We don’t want to just decide we want to change and have a female hero as the first inspiration is always the time period, but if you’re talking about, say, World War II the economies in England and France were run by women because the men were off fighting. So maybe in this context you were a woman in England during WWII. Why not? Nothing prevents us from doing it. I’m often asked if we’re doing a third game after ACII… I mean, we could do 35 of these.”
Sounds like the developers are either thinking out loud or giving us a red herring with all this talk about Europe. I think that Assassin’s Creed 3 could take place in feudal Japan and off the coast you might find the lost city of Atlantis. — As you’ll recall from playing the game, Subject 16 left behind coded clues written in blood at Abstergo, as well as the 20 glyphs he hid in the Animus for the Assassin’s to find. All glyphs put together unlock a video that shows Adam and Eve were slaves who escaped from being controlled by the First Ones and took the Apple of Eden with them. As they climb the roof of a futuristic building complex a flash of binary code reveals their location as Eden. It could be that the other slaves were building a Temple there. — Coming back to my point about this being in Japan. The environment Adam and Eve escaped into looks bushy with a large snow-topped mountain in the background. Which can be one of two of the world’s most famous landmarks, Mount Fuji in Japan or Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa! Take a look at the video and see for yourself:

December 2009 update: At the SpikeTV’s Video Game Awards 2009 on December 12th, Ubisoft’s Assassins Creed 2 won the Best Action-Adventure Game Award. When asked at the event where they’d want to set Assassins Creed 3. Jean-Francois Boivin, Production Manager on the second game, said “That’s something we don’t even know yet ourselves. Right now we’re just taking a break after shipping this game. But we’re thinking about where this license can go, and we’re working on concepts in the next few months.” Sounds like there’s plenty of time for YOU to tell them where you want the third game to take place…

    Custom Skins in LoL

I’m a big fan of Riot’s various skins for the champions in game. A lot of them are pretty damn cool, and it’s nice to be able to show your pride in a particular toon by playing with one of the skins. Buying all of them would be a little ridiculous, though, and there are a few standard models with no skins at all. Thankfully, a small community of artists has cropped up to provide custom skins for free.
If you head over to http://leaguecraft.com you can have a look at the skins available for any character. The site has full instructions for installation. My personal favorite is the Immortal Twisted Faith I used for the picture, but there’s also an The Dealer from Hell, a pretty cool Nidalee skin, and a nice replacement for Morgana. The skins only exist client-side, so your friends/enemies won’t see them, but it’s a nice way to add some flavor to the game. Did I mention it’s free?

Start with the tutorial for simple directions on installation. A lot of the skinners on the forums suggest you mess with a zip file in your DATA folder and it’s just not necessary.

    Fable 3

Fable 3 preview: It's the economy, stupid

    Fable 3 gold
If you played Fable 2 anything like the way I played Fable 2, you ended the game a very, very, very rich player. Why work a virtual job pouring cold beers when you could buy a piece of virtual property, turn off your Xbox, pour yourself an actual cold one (or 10), and when you come to in the morning, you're dehydrated and groggy -- oh, and you've been earning rent money in-game, too?

That feature -- the ability to earn rental income while away from the game -- went a long way towards making Fable 2's Albion feel like a living world; one that went on regardless of whether or not your hero was there to see it. That feature won't be returning for Fable 3. "It was a Fable 2 feature," Lionhead lead designer Josh Atkins tells Joystiq. "With every feature, we spend a lot of time reevaluating new things that make sense for the emotions we want to impact and get from players in Fable 3."

This is about making the economy "matter," Atkins says. "When we get into the idea of wanting the economy to matter and wanting players to really think about the gold; and whether or not we want them to have pause before making a big donation to the treasury; and whether or not we want to be emotionally involved. I think if you turn on your Xbox and you have a giant deposit, that kind of makes the experience tamer."

Tamer, yes ... but why didn't that matter in Fable 2? "We weren't as worried about the economic balance of [Fable 2]," Atkins says, "because we really wanted players to experience all the facets of the game. So putting up what we considered to be artificial barriers was something that was kind of against the overall philosophy of the game. We let players essentially play as they desired." But even though people were "enjoying themselves" with Fable 2's the-rich-get-richer economics, it didn't "matter" in the way Lionhead wanted.
The economy in Fable 3 is designed to make you stop and consider your actions before spending money.
"When we started Fable 3, we wanted the economy to matter more for a variety of reasons. Partially because we wanted it to be a real way for players to problem solve in the game and pick and choose their own path as to how they wanted to take advantage of the economy," Atkins explains. As a revolutionary fighting his or her way from insurgent to ruler, your relationship with money is more complicated and "therefore, it had to be more stable."

"Once you become the ruler, there's going to be a lot of people looking for handouts and a lot of people looking for help," Atkins says. "And you're going to have an interesting choice -- and we hope it's an interesting choice -- of choosing to give away or donate the money you've made in your personal fortune over to the greater population. And we want that decision to be interesting. And if that decision is flat, if there's no meaning behind that decision, then that moment is kind of lost.

But there's another reason the economy matters: co-op. Fable 3's co-op does away with Fable 2's awkward "henchman" implementation and replaces it with a co-op that matters. You play as your hero with your weapons and -- here's the important part -- your gold. You can marry a co-op partner or become business partners and, as would be expected, your gold also becomes their gold, and the requirement for a more meaningful economic experience becomes clear.
"We wanted the economy to matter in co-op so we added these two features that allow you to get married and allow you to be business partners," Atkins tells us. "One of the side effects of those two ideas is that if the economy is totally broken, then one of the benefits of getting married or being business partners -- that you get to share your gold -- is gone." So earning and keeping your wealth has to be a more lean-forward, participatory part of Fable 3. "The goal is for it to feel like you need to put more time into it if you want to amass that kind of fortune. It isn't just an easy decision. You need to think about each property; you need to think about whether or not you've put the right furniture in it."

Wait, hold on ... would-be real estate barons will need to actually take care of the dozens upon dozens of pieces of property they could collect throughout the game? Don't worry, that's what the fine tradition of English butlers is for. Atkins says, "The nice thing is that you have Jasper there, the butler, who will help you with these economic decisions.
"We wanted the economy to matter." - Josh Atkins, lead designer
You basically have the choice of having Jasper manage your property. He can go in there and basically make sure that all the houses have good furniture and that you're getting the most amount of rent for the state of the house. The butler is going to help you with all of this, so while you need to put more time into this, we have made it easy on the player as well."

Most importantly, the economy in Fable 3 is designed to make you stop and consider your actions before spending money. Finding a co-op partner to either marry or enter into a business relationship with has the ancillary benefit of making you wealthier. Money, and access to money, can open up parts of the Albion for those willing to spend. "There's a guy you run into who's requesting a donation to restore the bridge to the Fable 2 gypsy camp as a commemoration to the Fable 2 hero," Atkins told us. "You'll have a choice as to whether or not you want to help him build that bridge and then, when you do build it, you'll find that there's a lot of interesting stuff across the bridge. Maybe a whole other village," he teases.

Having a partner allows you to leverage your combined wealth to explore more of the world of Albion; however, with that also comes the weight of deciding how to spend your money. "There are a lot of aspects of the game that are easier if you have somebody who's your partner, your comrade-in-arms for solving these problems. And then, those partnerships become really interesting again when you get into the ruling section of the game, because it's not one person's decision. You're going to have to talk those decisions through because you are pooling your resources."

All the while, back in your Sanctuary -- Fable 3's new menu-system-that's-really-a-room -- your pile of gold waxes and wanes, giving you a literal, Scrooge McDuck-style representation of your wealth. "The reason we think the economy is important in Fable 3 is it's one of the areas of the game that's really up to the user on how they interact with it," Atkins suggests. In other words, you don't need to be wealthy, just like you don't need to be well-liked or honest. It's all part of the effort to make the economy -- and really all of your decisions in Fable 3 -- matter.
